The Series Continues

Christmas is behind us and this year is rapidly coming to an end; now I can spend more time on ART! Yeah! Today I worked on another bird and I'm sure if it's successful. I feel that the bird is insignificant and that there is too much going on. I only thought that the piece would be in a cage, feature a tangled garden and travel. The word TRAVEL is spelled out in lettering around the outside edges. I wanted the feeling of warmth and warm climates and the idea of "being set free" was part of the initial concept. I'm not sure that I achieved this...here is #4........

The Series Continues

Christmas is over....and the year is quickly drawn to a close. Also, it's the end of my year long course "Lifeboat 2017" with Tamara Laporte. Wow did I learn a lot!

As mentioned in a previous post, I am working on a "bird series".  Well here they are; I've completed three unique pieces so far, all mixed media, strips of paper and stamps...

Christmas Week

This year has been huge for me and my family. We moved across Canada from Victoria...very sad to leave such a wonderful city filled with lots of friends and a few family members, especially our son, Graham.

As we adjust to our new city, home and environment and as the Christmas season draws nearer, I realize just how important we are to both sides of our families and that we are very lucky to have this problem! Lots of families are in consent turmoil and I feel so lucky that that isn't the case here.

My sister Laura and husbands in tow; we drove to Connecticut to see our other sister, Chris and her family. While there we met newly engaged, Sarah and her fiancé Jeff; Curtis and had loads of fun. Curtis is in his last semester of university. The other reason for the visit was to scatter the ashes of our mother, Jeanne Adele Blanchard. We picked a beautiful setting on the Farmington River and with the sun shining we recited a few prayers and said our goodbyes. A very satisfying and peaceful feeling came over me. I thanked her for all she did for me for us.

My wish for this Christmas is for peace. Peace within yourself, family, community and the world.

Until next time.....

A Potential....Future Christmas Card

Okay, I've painted and repainted this year's Christmas card...not really happy with the outcome. So the other day I worked on two other possibilities...both are mixed media.

A New Series

I was looking for a "new" idea to work on because my year long course called "Lifeboat 2017" is ending December 31, 2017. I've really learned a lot especially creating mixed media pieces and layering and wanted to continue with the idea of lots of layers, but without the "whimsy faces" that I have so enjoyed. I really needed another focal point. Well, one great idea popped into my head yesterday! Birds! Yup, easy...birds in trees, birds flying, birds nesting....you get the idea.

I have eight, perfectly cut archival matt boards that I've been saving for ages over 10 years anyways. In my efforts to use up my current art supplies, why not use these matt boards as my substract. I prepped them all last night with gesso and now it's play time.

Here is the first beginning....I don't have a name yet and of course it's in the infancy stage.

I'm Seeing Red

I couldn't believe it! When we opened the mail, we had a ticket of $325 for going through a red light! One second! I couldn't believe it. The 3 photos of our car going through a red light at an intersection in Ottawa! Holy cow! I felt sick about it, I also don't remember even being aware that on November 17th I went through a red light. It is just not done! We have put the car away for the winter and I probably only drove the car 2 or 3 times in November. Gosh this moving, the expense of moving...no job....I feel sooooooo poor right now. Since the middle of November, I have consciously tried not to spend any money...not on coffees, or treats or wine for that matter! I've told a couple of people that, "I'm on a spending DIET"! I just want to get back on track! I know that it takes about a year, but it's two more years before I get my CPP and OAS. Patience!

The next time I see "red" is in my art journal!

December 1st, 2017

Wow, where has the time gone? This year was jam packed with travel, moving and tons of art! It's been challenging at times, learning all sorts of new things, especially a brand new city! The best part of this year...well I just can't name just one thing..there have been so many amazing events and learned tools, I am just very grateful for my supportive and loving husband, my daughter and son who have given me so many blessings and my adorable grandchildren, who keep me on my toes!

I am blessed!

A Frosty Experience

Two years ago I set out to create an amazing and "pretty" cookie that was inspired by the Disney movie Frozen - A Snowflake. Well, two years later I am back at it. I have a great "cookie dough" recipe that even my 5 year old granddaughter can roll out and three awesome "snowflake" cookie cutters. My lovely daughter has asked me if I would create "cookies for the bake sale" at the school. Well I jumped in with both feet - sure I can make 100 cookies - no problem! What was I thinking? First I have to experiment with the whole frosting experience...I don't remember it being this hard. My hands are a little stiff and the lighting in our condo is a tad lacking. However, I managed to bake, ice and pipe two dozen (that's only 24) of these lovelies. They taste great! But, boy oh boy, I won't be setting the bar so high in the future! It has taken me over 3 hours to decorate and ice two dozen cookies....it will take at least three nights working, piping, drying a 100 of these delicious cookies....and oh yah, I am travelling to the USA and don't have a huge amount of time.

Note to self - "don't over commit"...I do love to help out though! Sorry I forgot to take photos...I will tomorrow and then post again.

Improvements

I drew another whimsical face yesterday and I can really see improvements. This past year of Life Book 2017 and this included drawing the face, art journaling and trying out new materials has given me the courage to continue with the portrait. I can't predict where my new found talents will take me, I'm not concerned, but I do know that I can see the rest of my sketchbooks filled with "pretty whimsy faces". A sketchbook just filled with pretty faces would make me smile. The best is yet to come!

Fall In Love With Watercolours - Again

I had a friend visit from London a couple of weeks ago and suggested that I paint a "hare". Okay, I thought to myself, "why would I even consider this idea". Then I got to thinking, I have nothing to lose. I have the watercolour paper and the paint...just give her a try.

Wow, I forgot how freeing this medium is. If one can just add lots of water and paint and just have fun with the drips and flow. Loved every minute. I had't realized how much I enjoyed this medium. Thank you Anita for planting that seed of inspiration!

Wow, what a year of art lessons! This Monday was Tamara's last lesson from her. She is the inspiration behind Lifeboat 2017. I looked forward to her lessons the most and I have learned so much...especially to be "brave".

Best Friends

I'm so excited I could barely sleep last night! I felt little a little kid the night before Christmas! Yup, my dearest friend is visiting us in our new condo all the way from London, Ontario! We were to visit her, however with the dash to Waterloo and Peterborough, we just felt the trip was too much after all we have been through these past few months.

So, I've got to get ready for special lunches, dinners and of course wine!

The Final Choice

After reflecting on the 2017 Christmas card design, I felt it was missing texture in the halo. So I added the beams with raw sienna and lines using a thin marker.

At bedtime, my grandchildren love to hear me sing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", a Christmas carol that I sang to their mother every night when she was little. Maybe I should have a part of the carol for the inside. I will let that thought mull around the brain for a couple of days.

Now to create the card for printing...

2017 Christmas Card

Okay, I think I am brave enough to send out a "face" on this year's Christmas card. I had so much trouble with the nose and mouth for the "endearing pose". I need a lot more practice on side facing portraits.

Still have to let this piece settle in my mind...I'm thinking I need to add the detail in the halo!

Guess What!

It's that time of year, no not Halloween, but finding that "Christmas Card" image. So, yes I am trying to give myself lots of time to paint or just create that perfect image for loved ones.

This year should be more special because we have moved...yes, I know this subject is getting old. However, when I think about what Christmas means to me; it contains images of warmth, love, mother, child, stars....who knows what I will come up with!

Farewell Gerry Stephenson

I'm a little behind in creative works these days, as I attended a friend's funeral in Kitchener-Waterloo. Very, very sad eulogy by son, Andrew and very touching, there wasn't a dry eye in the pews. The part that is so emotional for me, is that, Marilyn is left behind after 50 years of togetherness, I can't imagination her loss. For Marilyn, it's going to be even harder as she has Parkinson's and relied on Gerry for so much. Gerry was 75.

When someone is taken so suddenly, it reminds me to be thankful everyday, don't sweat the small stuff and say "I love you" often. Laugh everyday no matter what the circumstances.

Gerry, you would have been extremely proud and touched by your family and friends...I'm sure you were watching.....

Friends from Lake to Sea

I treasure many things, even though I've given a lot up. One of those treasures' are friends. Friends that I have met since 2000 that have left a profound impression on me of gratitude. So this week we are returning to an old stomping ground - Peterborough County. So many of our friends have returned to their former roots, like us, have followed children and grandchildren...and many more are leaving to do just that. So we are "catching up" with some old golf buddies (is 80 old?), some family members that are older that still feel as if they are 80? Yup Aunt Nora is 92 and Uncle Don is....???up there somewhere.

Since we have moved back to Ontario we have had so re-connections it's crazy. We even have friends from Victoria visiting us and loving Ottawa so much, they came back to re-visit again. They all miss Bryce...his sense of humour and laid back attitude. I am so very lucky to have all these folks in my life.

There is a lot of turmoil in the world with the Trump administration in the USA. However, I am so thankful I live in Canada and that I am Canadian!

Finding the Time....

I realize that sometimes one doesn't have anytime to create. Be it family commitments, work, illness, friends...but to me that's an excuse. I have created so much more even though I've moved across the country (doesn't include the months of packing up stuff), working at Hudson Bay (I don't do that anymore), family commitments and visitors. Still, I have managed to eek out 5-10 minutes per day and six months later I'm still doing this.

I know that within a very short few weeks, the weather will be turning and I don't mean in a nice way! Yup, the yucky stuff is coming like it or not! So, when I do have endless time, I can look back into my sketchbooks and say...oh yeah, I was working on a "Princess/Disney" group of whimsy faces. I can also take those 30 day challenges (in my case "a Face a Day") and elaborate for bigger and larger pieces. I have suddenly realized that I have an amazing amount of sketches to work from and these are all "whimsy" faces. I could even paint/draw "real portraits as well". Remember in January of this year I had a real fear of portraits and faces. Loving them now!

So, while I am enjoying visiting museums and art galleries, which by the way "fill me up" and walking, golfing and exploring my new surroundings (that also fill me up); there is plenty of future indoor creative art that I can do for an entire day, not just 5-10 minutes.

I am looking forward to those quiet days, with the wind and snow blowing, and I am all cozy creating in my new home.

Thankful

We just celebrated our Thanksgiving weekend. Our first for Ottawa in thirty five years! Now that we are living here, there will be many such celebrations.

Over dinner, everyone including the grandchildren listed "What they were thankful for". The common statement was "our family"...even little 2 year old Roger.

When I look back at all the past celebrations that I have had the opportunity and joy to give, my heart soars with pride at my legacy. I wanted to create a loving, giving and supportive family and I think that I've accomplished that so far. Yes there are times when children squabble and couples argue, that's allowed as long as there is forgiveness.

My own siblings are scattered and some are no longer a part of our lives. That is out of my control. In my heart I wish this was different and we could all come together to celebrate each other. There is more love in the world than we know, too bad the media focuses on the "bad and destruction".

I am extremely thankful for my family, extended family, and little ones; my health and the love of my life "Bryce"! I feel totally blessed.

Catch-Up Time

October 3rd and I am making a few promises to myself:

1. Start looking for a sketch group with more convection. Winter is coming!!!

2.  Finish all those "lovely ladies" .... at least one a day.

3.  Start exercising daily... not just going for a walk, but with weights, treadmill etc.

4.  Start eating mindfully and no wine for at least 30 days. I have to loose 10 pounds before Christmas. So no sugar, limited carbs and no WINE.

So that's my plan.

I started exercising October 1st, started eating a low carb, no sugar, no wine on October 2nd and I finished two lovelies, one yesterday and one today.  Oh yeah, I a met a "urban sketcher" from Salmon Arm, BC and we are meeting next week (Friday).

I'm on a roll.....

Waiting

I seem to be waiting these days. Waiting for furniture to be delivered, waiting for my shoulder to get better, waiting for the bus with little Roger.....just waiting. I'm really excited to get more organized and settled in before the bad weather comes...yup I'm waiting for that to happen as well!

My mother had a severe stroke two weeks ago and it was decided to make her comfortable and give her palliative care. She did not have long to wait. She passed peacefully on Saturday, September 23 at 6:45 pm. I'm relieved that her wait is over. She was very unhappy (I don't want to elaborate)  and I did not have a relationship with her. Oh, I called her, wrote to her, sent her flowers etc. I tried to reach out but it was never reciprocated. She never met her lovely great grandchildren. I felt sad for her, because now I see how wonderful it is to have family around you...my daughter, my grandchildren, sisters and distant family..aunts, uncles and cousins. We may not speak regularly but we do get together on occasion. It means a lot for me to be back in Ontario and I am thankful that I do have a relationship with my children and now developing one with my grandchildren.

Rest in peace mom.

Sleepover!

The girls are so excited and have been talking about sleeping over at "Nana's House" for the last seven weeks. I needed to make this reality happen as soon as possible. So, after school on Friday, I picked them up after school.

The lesson on Monday were "Mini Spirit Dolls",  with Dana Dines, I knew that this was a perfect craft to keep little hands busy. I can see lots of "mini dolls" in my future!

Created by Frances, age almost 5
Created by Mia, age 7
Created by Nana - the hands tied together with the initials of the girls and a

I have started having my 2 year old grandson on Wednesdays and the girls are having their first sleepover tonight!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Wow another year has flown by. What with all the travel and moving around we did over the last year, I'm just going to sit back, read, paint and just BE!

I spent a morning this week going to thrift shops...not much there as the students in the Ottawa area have pretty much culled the best stuff, I did however managed to get a stool for $8!

I also gave Jane her day without children and took both Frances and Roger on Wednesday. We had a fabulous day visiting the Museum of Nature in the morning and after naps went to a local playground, followed up by a bus ride home! Very exciting for those two!

Bryce and I are just exploring what's in the neighbourhood by taking long walks along the canal and returning home via a street like Elgin and Bank...it's been very informative and I feel more comfortable with my surroundings.

Tonight, in celebration of my birthday, we are dining out at Mama Teresa's. Looking forward to being waited on!

First Day

Well, today is the first day of school for many children, including my grandaughters. Oh my, where has the time gone. Mia is now in grade 2 and Frances is in grade kindergarten.
I have enjoyed a fabulous summer with them. We spent 3 weeks at Sandbanks on Lake Ontario just outside of Picton.  Wow, that was truly spectacular. Sunny days, lots of beach time and amazing time by all..

So we have finally moved in to our "newest" place. Hopefully we don't have to move in the next year!

Anyways, despite the "winter" to come, both of us are enjoying "exploring" Ottawa! Maybe I will get around to producing some art....no promises...but I "hope to!"

Until September....Maybe

I just wanted to let folks know that I probably won't be posting anything new until September. Not only is summer an extremely busy time for us, we are also moving back to Ontario. Yup the cats out of the bag now! We have purchased a condo in Ottawa and have rented a cottage in Picton at Sandbanks for three weeks. My biggest problem is deciding what art supplies I need to have access to and not pack.

We are excited about this "new" adventure, however I will truly miss the weather and the beautiful city of Victoria and all the lovely friendships that have been made.

I have been feeling a lot of stress lately and just need to focus on these friendships and packing.

Hopefully I will have loads of work to publish in the fall.

My Style

My goal this year is to try to define my "mixed media" style and perhaps even "learn to love it". As a result, the Life Book lessons are really pushing towards "Finding You". The lesson was "You are Loved" but after completing the Inca Trail in Peru...I the Chinese symbol for "Strength" was my mentor. I found the quote on the web "inhale confidence, exhale doubt" and I don't know the author however these words really spoke to me.

Here is yet another example, a lesson from Effy Wild.

Letting Go

Now I do know a thing or two about letting go. I've moved a lot, like a lot...lost count. I have walked for 30 days across Spain and I have just completed the Inca Trail! Yup, I know a lot about letting go!

I did the contour drawing, then coloured it in with watercolours. Journaled over that gorgeous
outcome, messed up the beautiful work...but continued on with the process. Covered up the words with a couple of lovely acrylic paint and went back again a redrew another contour drawing and then painted that in...a long process, lots of layers and the outcome...just ok.

Feeling a Touch of Creativity

Yup, I'm getting back at it. The beauty of Life Book is that something interesting always arrives on Monday in your inbox. No thinking required. Just my speed right now!

It's been a tad crazy since I returned home. We put an offer on a condo in Ottawa. Yup, we are relocating once again, but this time I insisted on purchasing something, I am tired of living on the edge of "?"

Plus yesterday, Bryce and I celebrated 41 years of togetherness! I just wanted a drink at the Empress. The Victorian Gin Special was wonderful.

This piece of art was done on 140 lbs. watercolour paper. It was to be done on small canvas board with a watercolour ground, but I decided to just divide the paper into smaller sections, forget the w/c ground and just paint around the Indian Ink. Lots of fun. Abstract painting with minimal colours. Thanks to Melissa Dinwiddie (Less is More: The Healing Power of Intuitive Minimalism).

I Survived!

I survived the four day trek to the "Lost Inca City of Machu Picchu"! Our guides were fantastic. They were so supportive to ensure that you were successful. I was by far the "oldest" woman on the trek (that's never happened before - being the oldest at anything!) and I finished strong! Immediately followed by tears and emotion. I gave every ounce I had.

A big thank you goes to my wonderful sister Laura, who waited for me at all the check points. Together, we conquered the mountains. I couldn't have done this endurance test, trek without her! The views were breathtaking and the same time the steps and climbs took your breath away! The people of Peru were lovely and I have wonderful memories of a lifetime! What an experience!

My Intuitive Warrior

Ok in this week's lesson on Life Book is to bring out this Warrior Women; I just don't have a "warrior" inside of me. I have lots of other issues...but I don't feel Warrior Women is one of them. Basically the lesson is to "listen" to your "intuition" and then to "take action".

My "warrior women" is kindness, gentle and loving. So, as I tried the exercise in visualization to meet my Warrior Women; to visualize my travelling down a path, perhaps through a forest and then coming out into a meadow...I just felt warmth and love and saw beauty everywhere.

So my women, emerged as a "beautiful goddess" holding up "crystals of light" (representing snow) and "love" surrounded by the beauty of a spring meadow; all for the world to see and take.

Until next time....happy creating

PS: I won't be posting for the next couple of weeks, as I will be traveling to Peru and I am not taking any computer devices with me. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers as I hike the Inca Trail.

Continuing with the Fantasy Theme

I spent quite a bit of yesterday afternoon working on this weeks' lesson. The theme was "Give Your Story to Wisdom". Well I didn't think I had a story until I started working on the "elephant". I had remembered as a young child of about 6  years old, that a circus had come to our neighbourhood. You could hear the music and feel the excitement in the air. However, my parents refused to take us. I remembered being extremely disappointed and sad. So my elephant is "welcoming to all" to enjoy "a day at the circus". This piece is done as a mixed media, with collage, tombows (another amazing water based marker) and watercolour crayons. I am a little disappointed that the photo image is so dark.

The Sketching Continues....

Yes, I am still at it. I am sketching almost daily now and continue to create figures and faces from my imagination. I can't believe where this "Life Book" course is taking me. Wonderful to explore the face and hopefully, who knows maybe I will produce "real" portraits. Right now I am enjoying the process of just creating without pressures. I love it!

Experimenting

Today I tried out some iridescent paint. I had copper and light green. I'm not really happy with the outcome. I guess one really needs to purchase more "art supplies". Any excuse right!

I noticed that the end of the mermaids tail was slightly more successful than the individual painted scales.
