2016 Comes To A Close

It's a bittersweet ending to 2016. That said, Bryce and are blessed with wonderful friends and fabulous health! What more can we ask for? Maybe winning the lottery!

This past year I have really transformed my art into a daily practice through several personal challenges and I have set new ones for 2017. I've sketched in Spain, in France and I'm most likely going to sketch in Portugal and in South America, Peru!

I have more confidence and can sketch and paint in public with more ease. Who knows where my "creative journey" will take me, but I am in the "present"!

Happy 2017!

Christmas

We celebrated Christmas in Victoria this year, just the two of us. I spent the entire day drawing and trying to come up with a couple of "characters" based on my granddaughters to use in the Life Book 2017. The year long course starts in a week and I would love to use these little darlings in my life, as my Muse! I hope they don't mind.

Life Book 2017

I've taken the plunge....and signed up for an online art course that runs for 52 weeks. Not only do I get to learn new techniques, meet new people from around the world, I get to play with paper and all my lovely art supplies! Yeah! The course starts on January 2nd and on every Monday for the rest of the year!

It looks like a great year ahead!

A New App

One of the most frustrating things with technology, is that sometimes applications change, disappear or stop working completely! This is where I'm at! BlogSpot will no longer be supported with my devices like the IPad or IPhone. So yesterday I broke down and purchased the recommended App to use....

Today, I thought "yes" I would give it a try. I now just get a message "please purchase App" aargh...

Dizzy December

I have to admit that I am not "a super woman"! Actually I've known for quite some time now. Aha!  I'm working a seasonal shift at Hudson's Bay; after my quick trip to Vancouver, I always seem to bring home a gift, this year it's a head cold! As a result, I really need to pamper myself and not add any more pressure to my life. On that note, I may or may not be so creative this month! So if anyone is out there expecting great creative ideas and art work, it most likely will not happen until next year.

For all those reading, I wish you all a "magical and joyful" merry Christmas and a fabulous 2017!

2016 Christmas Card

Sometimes just when I think I've finished a project, I just have to add something more. Yup, the Christmas card needed a little black and a little bling. I'm giving it a rest now!

Here I Go Again!

The Christmas card! Every year I set myself up for the challenge of creating my family Christmas card. Actually, I have only done this once and I still purchased store bought cards. Well not me, but my wonderful hubby does! He usually gets these beautiful cards on sale during the boxing week sales. I really dislike waste. We have been moving around quite a bit, so he hasn't been buying mass produced cards.

Today, I sat down to create...I had fun and the creative juices just kept coming. I was looking for something "child like" and "happy". A mixed media "series" that I called "Peace, Love, Hope".

I started with a template-watercolour base and torn paper. I made four (4) copies and hand wrote words, then on the top of the next four copies I printed with permanent ink the words hope, love and peace.  Here are my results!

I think that these cards would make lovely "hostess gifts" in a set.

Doodling

Yesterday was Halloween and today was Frances' 4th birthday. Oh where does the time go? We enjoy all the festivities but had no time for art. I created this post on doodling for that reason when the brain is way too tired to come up with a creative idea....just doodle.

The art of doodling or dreaming with lines. A relaxing way to be creative and just let your pen decide.

Work in Progress

I took an introductory course in needle felting about a year ago and my intention was to make "lovely little hearts" for my grandchildren for Valentine's Day. Well needless to say .... that didn't happen. However I had some lovely colours in purple, lavender and pink. I had the impulse to needle felt a little gnome for Frances who will be turning 4 next week.

Head is now attached

Hopefully I will be able to finish tonight, if not, the finished item will be posted on Friday!

A New Colour

While I was watching some watercolour demos on you tube I came across one that mentioned "perylene green". I had never heard of this colour, but as I watched this gorgeous colour lay down a rich, deep and beautiful green I fell in love immediately. I knew that this colour was not made by Winsor Newton, so I headed to my favourite art supply store and there it was...made by Daniel Smith. I am not as familiar with the Daniel Smith brand but I knew that they were a very high quality product and of course perylene green is a series 3 which meant that I would pay top dollar. I laid down my money and off to home to experiment with this brand new colour choice.

No Fear

When I visit my grandchildren or vice versa I try to do some creative activity that is fun and somewhat geared to their ages. In just a few short months I've seen amazing growth....just practicing and persisting and "No Fear"!

A Touch of Fall

Seeing as I've been way too preoccupied by wee ones and thanksgiving weekend...and my sketchbook has been calling my name....here is a little sketch of fall items. I'm working tomorrow so I won't be sketching with the Victoria Urban Sketch group either.

A Touch of Fall...chestnuts and maple leaves!

Thanksgiving Weekend

Yesterday, the whole of Canada celebrated "thanksgiving". I know that I personally have a lot to be very thankful for. The weekend was filled with giggles and wiggles of three lovely grandchildren and the weather came through for us once again! As we all gathered around the table the only person missing was Graham, I could only feel a tremendous warmth and happiness that I have all these little and big people in my life. They humble me; they make me crazy sometimes but they always make me  feel happy and loved.

I didn't actually paint these last few days, but I did a massive amount of cooking and planning menus so that I could spend as much time as possible with the wee ones. My granddaughters were very interested in making "pocket lockets". The eldest (6 years) was so keen to make these that I felt I couldn't disappoint. You wouldn't believe it, but she learned how to sew on buttons and achieved skills in stitching as well. Well done Mia! Frances, just a tad too young, delighted in decorating her pocket locket with stick on jewels.

Here are the results.

Yupo Paper

I finally got my hands on a pad of yupo paper. This paper is amazing and a lot of fun. I have used it with fluid acrylics and watercolours. Now I would love to try some alcohol inks as well on this fabulous paper. Next pay cheque I'm picking up a couple of cool colours!

I used fluid acrylics diluted with flow release all products by Golden. This piece will need a lot more work.

Up Island

Bryce and are taking a couple of days in Parksville.  The weather has been fantastic. Low tide today was around 9:30 am and the shoreline appeared to be o.5 km away! Wow that's a big beach! After a lovely breakfast with friends, we hiked through Rathtrevor Park and the Community Park in Parksville. Hope for warm and sunny days for hiking and strolling the beaches. We are on the hunt for the perfect beach for future vacations with wee ones!

Eco Printing

Ever since I was a youngster I've had a love affair with texture. The look, feel and colour of fabrics, plants, pebbles, metal, water, wood, ice and snow and so many other simple things one sees or is in contact with everyday. The lines that are formed, the colours of the lines, the length or width of these lines and on and on. As an artist I have found there are hundreds of ways to experience and use texture and one of these discoveries is with eco-printing with plant material. I also love surprises and sometimes you have to let go of control in order to see the magic happen.

After a fabulous stroll through the park, I came home with a few choice leaves. I did a little research on the Internet to find a recipe. I didn't find exactly what I was looking for, however I did come away with information to experiment on my own.

Materials needed:
- 140 lb watercolour paper (I used Canson)
- assorted leaves
- 1/4 cup of vinegar
- 1 tsp alum
- 3 cups of water
- a few copper pennies

After wetting the watercolour paper, I place the plant material onto the the paper, paper, plant, paper etc. Wrapped elastic bands around the bundle. Next, boil the water, vinegar, alum and add a few copper pennies and put the wrapped bundle into the boiling water and lightly boil for 20 minutes.
Take the bundle and place in a dish or tray with a weight on top and let sit for a couple of hours. When you are tired of waiting, gently unwrap the bundle and set aside to completely dry.

Here are a few photos of my "eco printing"! I love all the gorgeous colours as well! The deep burgundy and reds worked really well.

The Royals Are Coming

Victoria is host to the Royal Family, Kate and William, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. It's fabulous that the "whole family" is visiting and staying at Government House for a few days! The whole town is buzzing...we also have three cruise ships in! It's going to be crazy downtown and I agreed to work a full shift.

It's a start. Yup, I applied a little paint and then doodled like crazy! I had fun too!

Settling In

I'm still "nesting" and settling into the new apartment; our new home, with fabulous views! A friend came over yesterday and hung a floating shelf in the office/art room. I've hung all the paintings and family photos; so nothing remains on the floor. I just cannot seem to produce anything worth publishing. I do have ideas it's just the excutation of these ideas that seem to be out of my reach. However, I have made some delicious Florentines, inspired by the Great Britishing Baking Show! I'm meeting a friend later this morning, trying to get to the gym oh and get the stew on for dinner tonight! I'm working at the store all day tomorrow and Thursday is set aside for golf. A few blogs ago I thought I was ready to just dive right in and get painting and was really excited. Gosh, the weeks just seemed to escape or rather disappear into thin air! I feel slightly over scheduled even though I'm not...maybe it's how time speeds up as one gets older? Hmmm I will spend the rest of the week to ponder this theory....

Returning

We have packed, moved and unpacked! Oh and yesterday was my birthday! Am I making excuses? Kinda of. I am really loving our new space and trying to solve all sorts of storage issues not to mention the "whole art room/guest room" and how this space will function effectively. What I am basically saying, is that all my creative energy is going into other areas around "settling in"!

This is all I can offer today!

Keys...or No Keys

We are currently waiting to pick up our new apartment keys and receive a locker number. Unfortunately we have had the 10 am appointment diverted until 2 pm. Until we have the keys in our hand I'm not holding my breath. As the the delay was because of applicances being delivered and we would really like to have refrigeration and all the applicances completely installed before we move in.

I've spent today thinking about keys......this is all I could think of creating with limited supplies...

In Transition

Once again, we are on the move. Yup, at the end of August we are moving two blocks; still in James Bay, however we are going into a rental only building, so the chances of us "putting down roots" are much higher. Right now the real estate market in Victoria is hot and people are selling condos and homes at all time high prices and at top speed. Even in the rental market, the cost is a lot higher and keeps going up. It is kind of scary, but we are lucky and have provisions to carry us through. Maybe we should have purchased property when we first came out?

So on that note, I'm not sure how much creative time I will have, between my little part time job, golfing and packing. However, I do have a project in mind and it will take me a few days to complete.

Speaking of "transitions", I'm taking an old painting, one of the first paintings I did out here; and I want to paint over it. Over the course of the next week I plan to work on this piece.

Here is a photo of the existing piece.....48" x 36" acrylic - unsigned.....

Hopefully by next Tuesday, I will have something to share...at least an update...stay tuned!

Blackberry Picking

Instead of creating an art piece I decided to go for a walk. I golf at a public course called Cedar Hill and they have a trail, 3.7 km around the perimeter of the course. In the six years that I have played golf here I have never walked around the trail that is frequented by a lot of individuals rain or sun.

One of the bonuses of walking on the trail is you can pick blackberries. Unfortunately, today they have been severely cut back as they are an invasive species to this area. As a result the pickings were slim and it took around 1.5 hours to fill my two containers.

It was quite an experience to see the "backside" of the golf course. Lots of Garry Oak, large and beautiful rock outcroppings, wildlife, a protected area "Kings Pond" and of course golfers.

Here are some photos:

Out and About

After a morning of practicing at the driving range (golf); I took a little drive looking for a great sketching spot. Unfortunately, I got a little turned around and found myself driving around the perimeter of Mount Douglas and all sorts of walking trails. I thought for a moment that I had entered a different world. A world filled with dappled light, giant cedars, abundant greens and cool temperatures.

I just had to return home and put down this feeling. I'm pretty sure that I "nailed it"!

First Anniversary

I can't believe that a year ago I started to "journal" by way of blogging! Wow, first a pat on the back to me for completing this huge commitment to myself....because if you knew me at all, I would have given up in the first month! I get bored very easily, but I didn't quit even through crazy busy times. I did however learn a whole lot about myself and my "creative journey" during this past year.

The greatest part of keeping this online journal that I learned is that it doesn't require a ton of time, a ton of supplies or even a ton of inspiration to do... you just create with whatever you have at the time within the time that you have at that moment. If "creative" thinking and doing is apart of your life, it happens all the time! All one has to do is "seize the moment"!!!

I found that I gave creativity a place in my everyday life...not just for "special" occasions. As a result I'm more confident in my pieces and look forward to realizing more of my ideas. And believe me, the ideas just keep coming!!!

I plan to continue this wonderful journey...who knows where I will go..

So I celebrated by making French Macarons!! Yum Yum
Here's a yummy photo!!

Vintage Car Show

We had an amazing weekend here in Victoria with the arrival of approximately 1500 vintage cars. Several blocks surrounding the inner harbour were totally blocked off to traffic with these gorgeous
cars lining the streets on both sides. Wow what a show and the weather couldn't have been better.

I sketched with the Vancouver Island Urban Sketchers.....

Beach Vacation

Just arrived in Port Angeles for our 90 minute sailing to Victoria. We have had a fantastic week in Cannon Beach enjoying the sun, surf, wind and of course the wonderful "little people" in our lives.

Our oldest grandchildren, turning 6 on Sunday, enjoyed a couple of sketch outings. I forgot to take photos of her sketches, however here are mine. If her mom isn't too harried after their trip home, maybe she will send me a copy.

Until next time...happy creating.
